I’ve shared my devotion to this band before, but I’m doing it again now–because this time I have free tix to two Groundation shows during their upcoming tour!
This is your chance to see one of the most engaging, thoroughly enjoyable live bands on the planet. The musicians draws from a depth of musical experiences and influences–they are a self-proclaimed “jazz fusion reggae” band, with some traditional Latin rhythms providing an addictive backbone. A true ensemble, the musicians listen closely to each other, while each of the nine band members is a great soloist in his or her own right. “How are we going to shine in the music?” asks Harrison Stafford, lead singer and songwriter. “It’s about writing the music that you feel is going to show the talents of each of the members of the group. You get an original sound that is defineable only by the people in the band.”
The February tour is Groundation’s 12th annual tribute to the music of Bob Marley, blending their interpretations of some of the reggae legend’s rare songs, with performances of their own work inspired by Marley.
The band has kept busy since their last album, Here I Am, in 2009. Beside their frequent touring schedule, they have been back in the studio recording their next album, Building an Ark, which debuts in March. Harrison also released Professor, his first solo album and a collection of songs all written during his visit to Israel in 2010. Joining Harrison on the album are a number of the living legends of one-drop reggae.
Stay tuned…. I’m thrilled to feature Groundation as the first artist in my new interview series. In February I’ll post a video and conversation with Groundation–the band shares some thoughts on their work, artistic vision, and what it takes to thrive as a touring band. More to come.
